Lazy Saturdays with Izzy

Saturday mornings...

With Tony having a wacky schedule with the only constant being he doesn't have a Saturday off and our kids being homeschooled with Saturdays being a sometimes school day, Saturday doesn't really hold the same magic in our household as it does in some.

Still some, like today, remind me why saturday is such a marvelous day to normal families.

We started out with easter bunny and eggs colored pancakes with whipped cream. Directly after, Ella headed to the play room and returned the favor and started bringing out courses of plastic food, starting with tea and sugar. She wants to be a chef.

She kept informing me there was an egg at the bottom of the bowl. Apparently that was a very important feature of the dish.

Also apparently a large ghost decided to jump in the side of the picture as my hipstamatic was capturing my plastic food spread. Jerky ghost ruined the picture and she had cleared my couch table before I had time to notice.

She also gave me a royal scepter (while dressed as Belle) that had the princesses on each side. When you turned the heart gem it made a sound specific to the princess. She told me this is how I would call for what princess I wanted. Unfortunately for her, before she had even returned to her kitchen Layla had the scepter and was calling for Ariel. And in Ariel came. She was going to learn how to do some quick costume changes in the next few minutes.

We haven't been out and about much this week so I asked if they wanted to go somewhere.
"yeah let's go to Disney World" shouted a delusional Ella.
As if it was that easy. Of course we would be there nearly daily if it was!!!

It's just nice to not have anything on the schedule (even if I need to) and pretend Saturdays are something different here too.

A dog by any other name...

Tony's dad said we needed a bigger dog that would keep wildlife away (or eat it) apparently cockerspaniels don't have any street cred with him. So, last night we ended up with a husky. Tonys favorite- not so much mine, although there are some right up the road sired by Disney dog actors! A dog with Disney lineage? I'll take two!

We named it Crosby, after Sidney Crosby- awesomeness in a cute package- from Pittsburgh Penguins but Ella hates that because "it's SPORTS. she's a girl." and in protest is calling the dog Crystal.

It cracks me up because she picked a real person she knows, probably her favorite person at church. They share a nickname - grizzle, because Ella would throw awful fits and I'd say her behavior was not befitting a lovely lady like name as Isabelle, she must be Grizzlebelle which became Grizzle for short. Im not sure what Crystal did to earn her name.

Miss Crystal also happens to have a son who is crushing on Ella. I think there must be a connection....

This dog better Kill some menacing creatures because I am not by nature a dog person and have found myself with two in a rather short span...

She does have a nice disposition though.

And you can't beat a name like Crosby... Or Crystal.

She moved- see her pirate scar?

I have large ears. The better to hear with my dear. I also have a Parti eye (multi colored eye ) which has caused many party jokes at my expense already. And a song "there's a party in my eye so pretty so pretty " thank you Yo GABA GABA

I don't like leashes and I am not moving until I feel slack in this thing.

Make Something Monday- the never going to end edition

I didn't post my Make Something Monday yesterday because in the process if it I had to go pick up Ella from her sleepover. We were at Walmart far longer than I thought doing things like test driving bikes and shopping cart jousting .

But here is an on going Make Something Monday.

My sister and I are painting a princess mural on Ella's wall. It started out as me just doing princesses but I felt they looked a bit odd hanging out on a blank wall so I asked her to add scenery. She started a tree and is on her way to add a castle in the distance, stream and cobble stone path.

When this wall is done Ella has demanded a Rapunzel and Flynn scene and Laci a pixie hollow... Going to be painting for quite some time.::

Another Disney Day- What you didn't do ADR for CRT during FD?!

I'm in the midst of crazy stressful dining planning for my Disney trip. We just booked this week and I only have 12 days before the 180 day mark to make ADRs (advanced dining resevations) .  Crazy you say?

No. Not when you go when Disney is offering the free dining plan.

While other times you may be able to mosey on up to any kind hostess and be given a wait time for a walk in, if you do this during free dining you're going to get laughed at by the same hostess and by all the other smug guests waiting in the their seat they scheduled 6 months in advance.

You see, free dining means EVERYONE at the Resort hotels is offered the plan with the purchase of the magic your way package (room and tickets) so unless you are an annual pass holder or opt to use another discount you're eating free. This means
              NO. SEATS. ANYWHERE.

And counter service restaurants where no reservations are accepted are like fight club. With babies. And a fixings bar.

Now why is this stressful? Well if only it were so easy to just pick where you want to eat 6 months from now- that alone is a task- I'm not sure what I want to eat tomorrow.
... Or for dinner tonight, I didn't thaw anything out.... I was making spreadsheets for meals 6 months from now.

"No kids idk what we are having for supper I can't figure that out I'm trying to figure out how in the name of Walt we are going to fit in a blasted Boma reservation to keep your dad happy! Eat a banana"

Not only do you have to know what foods sound good on the fourth Thursday of a month half a year away you have to figure out what park you will be in!

And no you can't just go magic kingdom epcot Hollywood magic animal kingdom magic.

No you can't because Wishes is only this night that night and maybe that night and the electro magic parade is only one night the week you're there- thank God coinciding with a Wishes fireworks night....

Oh and extra magic hours are at Hollywood  on this day but oh so is Mickeys Not So Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP) ... HOW DO I MAKE THIS ALL WORK?!?
(shell out an extra $300 for a park hopper and be done with it)
But if you're husband says "NO I hate Disney transportation we are not park hopping" you make grids and graphs and spreadsheets and scribble all over them.

-You plot out your week and mark down the park hours for each park.

-Then you note which parks have Extra Magic Hours (EMH)- hours only available to resort hotel guests - yippie .

-Then you note down all special events limited to certain nights  - fireworks, parades, shows, parties...

-Cross reference all of them. Making sure to take advantage of all EMH and special events.

*That will give you the best day for each park.... Based on my system .

Some people say don't do EMH parks because they're busy. Those people are insane people who get up at the break of dawn and head to a park . I don't do that. EMH in the evening are a beautiful thing allowing us to ride everything in a few hours with no wait.

You've pinpointed what days you will be where now to figure out restaurants by reading tons of reviews realizing some people think they're the Queen of Disney and no food would ever be good enough for them.

Check out this site for reviews based on the best eateries for kids.it's Disney though so anywhere will accommodate your little monsters darlings.  Even the nicest places have Mac and cheese and chicken nuggets.  Boma the African buffet has a Childs buffet full of American junk food for picky kids.

After you decide what places sound best  while making sure to pick the best character restaurants you have to decide when to dine where!

-Plop them on your grid based on proximity to the park you're in that day.
* Remember if they are in the park instead of a hotel you will need park admission.

-Doodle Mickey heads while husband puts in his two cents (you're planning this not him but humor him so he doesn't argue against  your plan out of spite and feeling left out... But he has no clue how involved this really is )

By now you should have at least most of your meals planned. I always end up tweaking it for weeks changing and canceling them up until a few weeks before for the less popular restaurants. Or cancelling extra reservations on the bus to Magic Kingdom...  Yes I ended up double booked a couple days :p see you need to call early for reservations because there are a lot of selfish indecisive planners out there double booking days ... Don't judge me.

- Sit back, breathe and put the pen down! There are too Many choices and not enough days!

Now technically not all restaurants have to be picked this early and if you're very flexible on times even less need to be. But there is so much to do at Disney and if you don't take that into account early you will miss a lot due to poor planning.

Restaurants that need to be booked far in advance:

-1900 Park Faire- character meal with Cinderella and her step family at Grand Floridian.

This has become hugely popular even harder to book than the castle meal.

-Ohana- Stitch, LILO and Mickey at the lovely Polynesian resort serve a family style breakfast and host games for the kids. The breakfast is very popular but there is also a non character dinner that I could not get an ADR for the life of me last year.

- Cinderella's Royal Table- breakfast, lunch and dinner inside the castle! It's the only way to go up into the castle unless you're some lucky jerk who wins a stay in the suite. It includes a picture with Cinderella. Breakfast and lunch are with princesses, dinner has a show with the fairy godmother and mice. It is two table service credits or many Many dollars.

Chef Mickeys at the Contemporary is a buffet meal with the Fab Five, it's kind of the quintessential character meal with Mkckey that everyone knows about so rather popular and should be booked asap. The food is good the characters are swell- can't go wrong.

Also, now if you are not on dining plan they make you pay the full price up front when reserving. Cinderella's table and a few other "signature " dining experiences.  Ouch.

So what are you waiting for?! This is complex! head your browser to this page
(it has a much better layout with all the show times etc and all park hours in one place unlike the official Disney site)
And start plotting out your vacation!

Free dining is now available for vacations most dates August 25- September 29! Check here for details. Rooms are limited and they're going fast! Some resorts are all booked out which is unusual this soon!

Make Something Monday- off with your head edition

It's Make Something Monday but we have been battling the plague of Norovirus and some secondary infection since Valentines Day. We had three days of everyone being healthy then everyone started throwing up again.

Now Layla is dealing with a bit of stuffiness which for a baby is apparently a huge deal as I have had to stay up all night with her the last two nights.

I got an hour sleep today - at 11 am bringing my two day total to 4.

I made nothing this Monday.

Well not physical anyway.

I had Tony rent a bunch of movies a few days ago realizing we would be couch and bed ridden over the weekend with nothing to watch. Silly me, with kids movies take s good 6 hours to finish! So today I just got around to the last of them - Anonymous.

It's about the whole was Shakespeare really Shakespeare or just a ghost writer for a noble man controversy. It's set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I - a Tudor.

I love Tudor history and have shared some great nerdy historical fiction fun with the bestie. Subsequently I bought Laci a kids version of the diary of a young Elizabeth Tudor a few years ago. She liked her instantly for the red hair they share.

Well of Course I didn't get far into the movie and Layla demanded to be taken to bed. She doesn't like to nap downstairs. I paused the movie and hoped to get a nap in with her. That didn't happen.

When I came downstairs I came upon Laci and Ella discussing Lady Jane Grey, Catherine ... Henry the VIII wives.

Apparently not knowing how to work the new tv they turned my movie back on watching enough to find out it was about Elizabeth and to give me a spoiler of a sword fight...

As I walked into the kitchen to make a quick dinner before they headed to see The Lorax I heard "he had 6 wives. A lot of them were beheaded"

Ella: " that means dead"

Thanks Scholastic!

In any case I did make something this Monday- a couple of British history buffs.

Oh and their favorite wife - "Anne Bullion" (Boleyn)
Now off to finish my movie.

Happy Blankey

One day when Laci was still a tiny baby long long ago we were out shopping with my sisters. We walked by a stuffed animal display and she pointed to a small brown dog with a red collar and said "doggy woof". It was the first time she pointed at something and labelled it so of course she came home with the dog.

She still has it and still loves It- although I must admit she is a stuffed animal hoarder. As long as it doesn't transition to real animals when she moves out winding her up on animal planets uber creepy Animal Hoarders , I'm ok with it.

Two weeks ago I was shopping with one of my sisters, passing time waiting to pick Ella up from her friends and we strolled through the blanket aisle. Layla saw a Minnie one and squealed. It was vintage 1930's Minnie so I was surprised she recognized her, but when I handed it to her she bounced and made her crazy noises she does when she sees Mickey and Minnie in any form - too much excitement for her tiny body to contain . She started cuddling it and I thought well its making her happy so I'll get it.

The thing with Layla is she hates blankets. Always has . She will thrash and kick and yell until a blanket is removed from her . She would rather be cold than feel constrained by a piece of fabric on her.

She played with the blanket for most of our shopping time but when we got to the register she had forgotten about it. I decided she wouldn't use it and Tony is always yelling about the massive amount of blankets in the house so I picked it up and said to Leigh Anne that I wasn't going to get it after all.

Just then Layla ripped it from my hands snuggled it to her face and said
"happy, mommy, happy"

Yes I bought the blanket. How could I not? This little baby who barely talks except in some sort of infant French clearly told me this blanket made her happy. Heart - melt.

It immediately reminded me of Laci and her doggy. I can't believe that little baby is already 8!

I'm glad I bought it. That night while trying to enjoy buffalo chicken dip and watching the Help screams came from upstairs. Layla had thrown up . She then did so twice more while Leigh Anne was there and once in the middle of the night . She was sick for 6 days and the only thing - besides mommy- that soothed her was "happy " .

It's so sweet and such a cute baby thing to do but at the same time, I realized yesterday that she's growing up because she is old enough to pick out things she likes and to know those specific items from say any of the other 20 plush blankets we have around here. She now is a blankey baby- but only with the one she picked.

I've Been going through clothes because well that's all I seem to do. I had weeded out a bunch that had a stain or were never getting worn and too small, but not liked well enough to save for the next kid. Its allotted me quite a bit of fabric to choose from to make clothes for the American girl dolls- on the cheap!

I have so much, in fact, I felt I better have this Make Something Monday be American Girl clothes to get rid of some it. So I got to cutting and sewing and ended up with these:

Fancy dress from a Liz Claiborne top of mine.

Complete with leg slit lol

Nightgown from remnant bin fabric at JoAnns. Layla loves expensive dollies!

This is from a Carters Romper that was outgrown.

A toddler shirt turned into a fun summer dress. The girls like them strapless but I thought straps would have made it cuter. I love the color and it would go well with their Hawaiian Kanani dolls!

Another Disney Day- things to buy pre-trip

I wanted to post part of my trip report for today's Another Disney Day post but alas I'd have to go search for wifi so I could upload it from the laptop. We had a play date at the house today so I didn't go anywhere.

Instead I'll share a favorite tip of mine.

Meeting characters are the highlight of a Disney vacation for most little ones- (and some adults) . The big thing while at Disney is getting autographs.

Disney of course sells autograph books and pens especially for this purpose so the treasured signatures have a nice place to be displayed. They're fine, there is nothing wrong with those and actually the deluxe ones have a slot for you to insert the picture of you and the character next to the autograph.

Fun while on the trip, but my kids never bothered with them again.

This year I got this book. For those who dont feel like clicking the link it's the Disney Animation junior book of animation.

It's a beautiful book filled with all your favorite characters- pre Princess and the Frog. It hasn't been updated in the last couple years.

What we do is have the character sign on their page in the book. The book is interesting so the kids would look at it anyway and they get excited over seeing the signatures pop up.

It's paper back and what I mean to do but didn't was take it to Staples or another office supply store and get the covers laminated. It's also a good idea to get it spiral bound there. You can then add pages in whatever colors you like to use as spare pages for the few characters who don't appear in the book.

It's fun because the characters really act excited seeing a book different from the normal WDW autograph books. Just make sure when you see Snow White she doesn't have to look for her own page...

Story to follow.
But not in this post.

The best writing utensils to use are at least marker sized. I like the sharpies with the click tops because there is no cap to mess with and even the characters can click it on. Remember fuzzy characters have huge hands and little dexterity so you have to take that into consideration. And always have your books ready to go. Even for Stealth Snow Whites...

Here's What Wednesday &

Here's What:

The word is AND people. What is with everyone on my facebook wall writing (for example)

" the other day I ate pizza an cheesesticks an pepsi."

Now I'm not a grammar Nazi and everyone has a misspell from time to time. If you're on a smart phone like I have to be , you probably have quite a few thanks to the combo of touch screens and auto correct.

What is irritating about the" an" incorrect usage is threefold.

1. It's intentional. You know how to spell the word right? Ella knows how to spell it so I'm sure people using facebook do as well. It just makes you sound lazy and uneducated people. Really uneducated. I say this from a place of love. I'm trying to help, I really am. It looks bad.

2. There are accepted abbreviations of the word and. And really people, is a three letter word that long that you can't spell the whole thing? Is it too hard to stretch your thumb on a phone or middle finger on a regular keyboard to hit the d? Your finger rests on the d in home position! It's right there tap it.
There is a whole symbol all it's own for the long word and . It looks like this & . If you've ever watched Wheel of Fortune with your grandma you know it is called the ampersand. There is no reason to be typing an for and! If it was long like aanndferand instead of and you know what the abbreviation would still be and not an because...

3. An is it's own word entirely! It's a whole other word that you are using in the place if the correct word. You are changing the meaning of your sentence because in no way shape or form ever does an mean the same thing as and.

It wouldn't bother me so much if it were the teenagers doing it they spell everything in a stupid form Thanks to text messaging. I have lost hope for the English language because it will all be consonants in a few years because no one under 16 today will remember how to not text spell.

No it's grown people my age and even older much older doing this. You know Better and you're too darn old to be typing dumb stuff like an. Do you do it to look cool like i don't know- snooki? Because really this is the demographic you're appealing to and looking like when you speak that way. Stop please, you're embarrassing yourself and I hear all kinds of people talking about the "aners" you're being judged. And not for your coolness.

Look at this crazy little person. Even she knows how to spell and.

Make something Monday mattress edition

I've actually made quite a bit the last couple weeks but keep forgetting to photograph and blog it. Mostly I've made tons of doll clothes for the girls American Girl dolls. I love repurposing old clothes - it's so easy because I make sure I can use some of the original seams saving me much work.

Today I mass produced doll matresses.

American Girl dolls cannot be slept with. I mean you can, if you like $100 dolls with loose limbs and heads and matted hair. I prefer them not to look that way or to have to brush doll hair all day to remedy bed head so my girls are not allowed to sleep with their dolls.

That leaves a predicament- since they are such valued members of my girls lives they feel they need beds. Now at $100+ each I don't have too much sense to buy beds for all the dolls. Laci has two and some fold out futon you can't buy anymore. Kaya leads a simple life and has a native American bed roll (that goes in her huge expensive tee pee so really she lives more lavishly than our other dolls). Ella has the bitty baby trundle bed but sadly no bed for her big girl dolls.

Enter crafty mommy with her hand quilted cape.

I found a great tutorial on Ana white for this gorgeous farm house style bed. I love it more than the American girl beds. Except for Ceciles.

Sadly I do not own wood working tools. I think I'm going to talk Tony into them though because they are cheaper than buying a bunch of doll beds. ( shut up I know they don't all need beds but my girls love it. )

So I opted on just the mattresses for now. In a mood to do it now I searched for something to give me enough fabric. Then I spotted it - long unused shoved in my walk in closet taking up storage space - a bright pink snuggie.

I know, I know. I didn't want a snuggie for any infomercial hype or insomnia related purchase. I was going on a road trip with the bestie and for some reason she decided snuggies were needed for our concert trip. As she ran threw Target excitedly toting her sleeved blanket treasures her husband sucked her joy away with the negative shaking of his head. He's rational. we were making a free concert festival very pricey.

Luckily when she called to tell me her story I happened to be in walmart and made my way from the Mexican foods to homewares and grabbed two pink snuggies. I had long mocked sleeved blankets but now a sudden sense of purpose had set upon me. Our trip would not be complete without these. Besides how could we craft gift bags for the performers in warmth in the car without the aid of these remarkable creations.

The snuggie does not meet my blanket standards and as such was soon retired after our lovely Indiana road trip. Instead of throwing away this item that was part of a lovely memory it was going to be repurposed! Trust me it is much more useful as doll mattresses and pillows than it ever was as a blanket. The rational husband was right - don't buy one.

Anyway here they are! A fleet of pink beds. Well three if the eight.

And the good news is they will fit all those fab Ana White beds I will make ....

Another Disney Day

It's that time of year again- I'm fully engaged in planning our next Disney trip!

Normal people just go on a Disney vacation like they would any other- book it and go- but there is a sub set of the population who will not set foot on sacred Disney soil without reading at least three guides, spending countless hours on Disney world message boards, and making spreadsheets, grids plotting each scheduled event from EMH (extra magic hours) to parade and show times thereby ensuring each park day is spent in the best choice for maximizing magical opportunities. This all before making ADRs (advanced dining reservations).

It's advanced vacation recon and not for the faint of heart.

Don't let it stress you, you can jump into a Disney vacation with no reading or planning and have a beautiful time.

Ignorance is bliss afterall and you will be clueless to all your missing out on, while uber planners like myself utilize our knowledge to maximize our time and take advantage of the little known perks of Disney.

We only go once a year so I feel it's my duty to pack all this in for my kids. My friend goes several times a year and is in fact on her way now (jealous) and though she does read up some, and was the one who first told me about the crazy Disney forums I frequent she probably has done less planning/ research than I and this is only my third trip total! Frequency of visits means she can gather this info naturally, though she has read enough to know of many perks beforehand - like the Wishes desert buffet and preferred viewing area.

I don't have the luxury of frequent visits so I go into crazy planning/research mode for about 8 months of the year. And I love it! The only thing better than being on a Disney vacation is planning one.

So since this is occupying about 85% of my brain at this time and i have several friends planning their first Disney trips with their kids I am going to start another new weekly segment-

Another Disney Day.

Playing on their current promotion One More Disney Day, I feel it's an appropriate title.

In this segment I plan on interspersing little vacation tips and tricks I've learned, planning info, any little interesting tid bits about Disney that strike me , Walt Disney World news, and my own trip report I'm writing from our last trip. I wrote it up for our own memories but since I use this blog for that purpose anyway I'm posting it on here. Yes, I'm still writing it!

So Disney fans you'll enjoy this, others maybe don't read on Thursdays...

I'm not pretending all this info is original to me in any sense. I'm merely packaging what I find helpful and interesting for my readers so they don't have to search on their own. I have what's called a marathon nurser in Layla which has left me sitting for many hours over the past 17 months and much of that time is spent researching Walt Disney World, not many have that much time where they are forced to sit and entertain themselves so I will help by wrangling all the massive info from the interwebs in one convenient place- muh blog. You're welcome :) Feel free to pin Anything you find helpful ;)

I was going to leave this as just an intro/ announcement but I'll start with a personal tip that I came up with on my very own.

Disney trips are chock full of memorable moments each day. But as sensory overload and fatigue set in those memories fade away.

What I found to be endlessly useful this trip was to jot everything down in my iPhone . Waiting in line is a great time to do this. Unfortunately I waited often to do it in bed and probably forgot little things but still so much was retained that I would never have remembered. Now months later I can read my notes and the memories come rushing back and I can capture them forever as I write out my trip report. It's worth it! So when your child eats her first Mickey head ice cream- take a picture and write it down in your notes for the day, a cast member gives you some kind of pixie dust- write it down! All the little magical moments are still magical and you'll thank yourself later!

(staring endlessly at Cinderella's castle while waiting for Daddy to pay our Crystal Palace bill...magical)

Valentine's Wish

What do I want for Valentine's Day?

To get a full nights sleep like a normal human- preferable without child feet up my nose.

To not have to clean up vomit three times during a movie

To not have to stop that same movie 20 times making "The Help" a 4 hour cinematic feature.

To pee without an audience

To take a hot bath without hearing what sounds like the aftermath of the apocalypse coming from the playroom.

No boogers wiped on my shirt

No one eating boogers

Just no boogers

For a room to stay clean longer than 2 hours after I clean it.

A nap. Because even if I got that full nights sleep- I have a lot of catching up to do.

To be able to paint my nails- both hands and for them to dry before I have to pick up a screaming kid so I for once don't have fabric imprints in them.

Just really would be nice to have a nice meal alone with my wonderful hubby! That's all! We've really had no time lately and it's sad. We were going to be able to do a lunch today alone but poor Layla started throwing up all night :( so the kids ended up staying home. Magically she was fine all day...

Since I didn't get any of that, I guess I'll settle for the two lovely vases of flowers Tony got me and our new tv we picked up in lieu of our romantic lunch date.

...Because I totes deserve to watch some Real Housewives in their big screen hd glory tonight!

After I wrote this I popped in The Muppets season 1 for the kids to enjoy - and they did enough so that I fell asleep on the couch . So i got my nap But I awoke to this....

Those are pretzels...

Totally cancels out the short nap.

Mouse In the House?

Living on a farm surrounded by fields you get all kinds of unwelcome guests creeping in your drawers and closets under cloak of darkness.

We now have a creature in our house who is rummaging in our cabinets; chomping through packages and ruining food leaving messes all over.

All of these are ruined.

Here is the creature responsible for all the messes and loss of food.

It's quite a cute creature. Look at the big teeth with which it chomps through plastic.

Unlike most scavengers it has pretty cute feet:

I have no idea what her problem is! She is like a house raccoon scavenging about the house digging in the trash if escapes me for one minute! I keep her well stocked in bananas and cookies and she eats very well at meals- yet still she feels the need to search for food. Sometimes she will even walk away when I'm feeding her to go find a random bit.

Now that she has these teeth she chomps through all kinds of packaging, even Capri sun pouches.

Not sure why I can't have a calm kid. I call her beaver due to her chomping. She is in the juice boxes now...

Rumplestil-puppy

I want a dog with a dress. She's going to grow a dress and I want her no silly just good fashion sense

We got a cockerspaniel as an early Christmas gift for the girls the week before Thanksgiving.

She's a good dog but hard to house train and excitable bladder. Thank goodness we don't have carpet but still, it gets old.

Joking one day I said, "why don't we get a different dog? " .

Laci yelled "noo" I was surprised because honestly she doesn't bother a whole lot with Peppermint. So of course I ask her why.

"I want a dog who will grow a dress!"
Me: "you can put a dress on any dog"

"no GROW a dress!"
"What are you talking about Laci?"

"this dog is going to grow a dress and I WANT a dog who will grow a dress !"

"laci that is just silly."

"it's not silly. Its just good fashion sense."

I gave up in the face of absurdity and walked away wondering what on earth made our normally sensible, precocious 8 year old think she had a magical Rumplestilskin type dog that could make fabric and thread come out of nowhere, or worse GROW out of nowhere.

Then it hit me. She was thinking of these pictures:

-

Our dog is not allowed to grow a dress!

Make Something Monday

I had a skirt I had finished for Laci but was too small from when I began sewing last year. The girl who had made the tutorial did not have the measurements right. (and though she argued with me that she was right she sent out a correction to the pattern a month later....) I kept the skirt hating that I wasted all that fabric and realized recently how easy it would be to make some doll clothes from it. If I did skirts, the bottom seam would already be done for me.

So I got to cutting ...

They insisted strapless but I think it would be cuter with a strap...

I also made a green ruffle skirt but didnt get a picture. Pretty productive!

-obviously this isn't the same skirt and I didn't make it today. Ella wanted a birthday skirt for Izzy to wear to Chuck E Cheese extravaganza so I used left over fabric from Layla's birthday banner to make a festive bubble skirt.

Maybe it prevents bed head?

Laci is our artsy kid. She wants to be a fashion designer and loves accessorizing. The kid does not need glasses but most days has them on because she likes how they look.

Her new thing through out the winter has been "bed hats".

She wears a hat to bed every night and now has her sisters in on it too.

Ella isn't the picture because she's not sleeping here tonight... Again :(

I'm glad I have oddly creative kids- makes being a stay at home mom interesting!

Princesses and Paninis

I love little girls.

Ella had a chuck e cheese party with a few friends yesterday at Chuck E Cheese and today the girls were trying out all the new toys.

As I was eating lunch the princess keyboard she received (thanks Blake and Bubbee) came out playing music . Ella ran away only to return dancing about in a Cinderella dress. She ran a book over to me informing me it was my book for autographs. Apparently my lunch had been transported to Walt Disney World and I was dining at Cinderella's Royal Table at a character meal.

She played the part well, even posing for pictures with my children.

American Girl Place - D.C.

Last week we spent Ella's fourth birthday at American Girl Place at Tyson's Corner in DC.

On our way down she apparently thought it was her Chuck E. Cheese party scheduled for a couple friends with her later in the month. This led to a breakdown. On my part.

Not really but I did stress a bit as American girl Bistro was reserved for us not just for lunch but the party package- held by credit card! Not to mention I didn't want to drive to DC and spend an exorbitant amount for a mediocre lunch if it wasn't what the birthday princess really wanted!

After making sure this was how she wanted to spend her birthday- and not what big sister talked her into we continued our journey.

As we pulled into the parking lot American Girl Place was visible in all it's glory and the squeals began - from me. Laci isn't a squealer and I want shrieks of glee so I have to start them and typically one or all will join in.

We started to say happy birthday Ella and Layla started with us! She's never done that before, but she had heard it Many times on the drive! We began to sing Happy Birthday and we heard from the back "appy irtay ooo too!" Layla was singing along! It was her first sentence and her first song with real words. What a sweet birthday treat for Ella!

We found decent parking and rushed inside after stopping for the obligatory front of store pictures.

As we rush inside to doll paradise, no time to ooh and aah as Ella rushed to the bathroom. She was in awe of the bathroom Decor, butterflies on stall doors, doll holders (yes to hold your doll while you potty) and pink pink everywhere. I immediately felt better knowing that if the bathroom was a hit we made the right birthday plans for her.

The girls enjoyed perusing the glass doll cases, a dizzying array of scenes showcasing outfits and accessories like some museum exhibit. The girls declared which dolls they were getting that day, then for the next birthday and Next Christmas and so on- then changed their minds with each new display.
Meanwhile, Layla rode the escalator again and again.

Downstairs Ella found the My American Girl doll she has had her eyes on for months ever since she first debuted in the fall catalog wearing a pink ballerina outfit. Dirty Blonde hair and blue eyes, she resembles Ella quite a bit.

I was able to convince her to hold off on buying until after her lunch so with Marie Grace in hand we headed up to the Bistro.

It was decorated lovely, Ella gasped at the pink gerbera daisies and huge booths in differing shades and hues of pink. Chandeliers in butterfly ceiling murals caught her eyes.

A major bonus to our mid week reservation- we had the bistro all to ourselves for the first part of our meal!

The servers were very sweet and made the girls (and their dolls) feel like royalty. They complimented their outfits noting they had watched them while they were getting pictures taken outside and knew they were the scheduled birthday.

While the girls sipped pink lemonade waiting on appetizers we read the conversation starters on the table.

We got some interesting answers, especially with Ella who may not be quite ready for an intense interview.

Me: "what is the best compliment - that means nice thing- someone has said about you?"

Ella: "well my name is Ella and my favorite color is pink. I have the bestest friend and her name is Rachel, she likes pink too.

Me: " that's great Ella, but has anyone ever said anything nice about you that made you feel good?"

Ella: "I'm not done my list. We both like pink A LOT! Rachel always tries to get the pink things first. I like spaghetti. I have sisters one is a baby. I take dance...

Lunch was mediocre. You're paying Disney world prices without giant animals coming to hug you and give you memorable photo ops, so reheated frozen food and small portions just aren't acceptable. My pasta was good- but not special not enjoyable , it was edible. Tony had a $20 burger and the girls $30 mini pizzas. Now we did the birthday package so we got a nice cake (yummy and pretty but the box had a grocery store label) and the girls got a gift bag so that factors into price, but still bistro- please.

After eating Ella decided it was time to dance. She got up in The middle of the bistro and clogged and did some kind of freestyle. I love This about her. It doesn't matter where she is- she dances. If she hears a song that moves her, well she moves . Layla joined In and we had our own dance party.

Apparently children dancing is the international sign that a table is done with their food and the table was cleared and out came the cake- an all pink cake.

The staff(2 girls) awkwardly sang happy birthday looking around and voices fading in and out as though they were surprised they were mainly doing a duet. I'm sure most mouse sing loud but at that moment I was singing a word here and there as my big camera hid me holding back tears. The cake and candles hit home that my baby Ella was four and for me four is a new milestone solidly closing the door on baby hood- and all that hits standing in the American girl store.
They did have Layla yell singing her newly learned phrase "appy urtay appy urtay" throughout the song so they had some help.

After she blew out the candles I went and hugged her and whispered mommy thoughts to her. Layla screamed as she saw the cake being taken away to be cut and Ella started to cry because she thought she didn't get to eat it.

As they brought our slices out Layla walked over to Ella singing her version of happy birthday. It was the sweetest thing she's ever done.

Tony had to take Layla to the escalators and that left me to be a little more relaxed and enjoy the girls. They were eating cake and ice cream and Laci said
"look mommy, I'm going to eat elegant"
She then took dainty bites and held her spoon just so.
After a second of watching her sister Ella turns to me and says
"and mommy look, I'm going to eat like Beast"

I laughed so hard. Of course Ella would eat like beast.

The girls got a goody bag with a book and a cute birthday shirt for their dolls, even a plastic balloon for the dolls to hold. We all thought that was pretty great and the girls had a blast posing for pictures with their partying dolls. Poor mari grace barely survived the party as Ella knocked her chair off the table nearly 30 times. There may be a conspiracy to get dolls sent to the doll hospital (it's a real thing people) involving the bistro and doll chairs. Layla and Tony made an early exit to ride the escalator for a half hour.

Now for the exciting part, the girls got to choose dolls! Laci got one too because a trip I thought we were taking around her birthday didn't happen and she wanted to pick one out at the store so chose to wait until Ella's birthday. A phone call from grandma allotted Ella another doll or something equal in price.

Ella nearly lost her mind making this choice. Her heart was set on the blonde my American girl doll but we had to keep going between floors to pick what she wanted from grandma. A bed, clothes, horses, another doll? Maybe she should get McKenna- the girl of the year - and her gymnastic equipment. As we headed back downstairs for the fourth time in five minutes a young employee decided to offer what she thought were sage words of advice after learning my four year old was picking a birthday present shouting after us "we recommend the bitty baby or bitty twins for children under 8"

Sigh "she already has all of those and Marie Grace and Kanani..." I replied, Already on the escalator trying go keep Ella from running down it. (I have irrational escalator phobias and grim scenarios play out in my mind during slow ascents and descents)
As I shook my head at the oblivious very young associate trying to tell me not to buy an 18" doll and instead get the cheap baby ones I wondered
1. If that was policy because I cannot imagine a store laid out to entice you to buy insane things like pianos and victrolas for baby dolls would really try and get you to spend LESS money on a cheaper option
And
2. Today is a school day so she is at least 18 which means I am so old if I am thinking a college student is "so young" Ella is four today and I am old. Terrible terrible realizations. Thank you American girl store. Maybe you should add wrinkle cream to your stock.

Once downstairs another terribly young associate told me what a good choice we had made in coming mid day on a Wednesday. Apparently every Saturday turns into mommy daughter roller derby at the store - the skates (except for the bkxes of doll roller skates in julie's accessory display) with elbows flying, angry words and wall to wall people all vying for dolls. The worst place apparently is the salon line where delusional people stand for an hour to pay $20 for someone to put a dolls hair in pigtails....

After gaining a new appreciation of the unexpected blessings that homeschool provides (like doll shopping without deceiving a black eye) we continued out search. Ella was soon overwhelmed and when I would offer options to get an answer her eyes glazed over and she kept saying nonsense words. she ran in circles for a moment until I placed her on a bench. It was getting bad. I was afraid we had broken her.

After sitting down for a minute I made an executive decision after determining she answered "doll" to
"would you rather have two dolls or a doll and a bed"
I'm still not certain, as she was still staring off blindly and had shown anxiety that my questions of furniture or clothes meant in her mind zero dolls not one doll AND other things. I decided the choosing of $100+ of other items may put her in some kind of mental breakdown from the stress so we got 2 dolls and we headed back upstairs to grab McKenna to go home with "Isabella" her look alike doll. Laci had decided on Julie months ago and was set.

After an endless photoshoot with the McKenna cut out as Ella tried to mimic her pose exactly, our day at American girl was done.

It was somewhat stressful thanks to Layla but overall very fun. I have to admit I, as most mommies I'm sure, love these dolls as much as the kids. I wish I'd know they existed long ago. They were around even "way back in the 80's " as my kids like to say about my childhood.

Insane cash drop and all, I'm looking forward to visiting again for Laci's birthday. We left with two ecstatic little girls, an exhausted baby and ten dolls in the car. (many had come along for the ride) . It was a great day full of girlhood wonder. And pink. Lots and lots of pink.
